What after 10th? How to choose the right stream (Science, Commerce or Arts)

1 November 2026 · 7 min read

"What after 10th?" is one of the first big decisions a student makes, and often the most stressful one for parents. The stream you choose for Class 11 and 12 decides which entrance exams you can take and which degrees will be open to you. The good news: with a little honest thinking and the right information, it is a decision you can make with confidence.

The main options after 10th

  • Science (PCM, PCB or PCMB): leads to engineering, medicine and allied health, pure sciences, architecture, and many other courses. It keeps the widest range of doors open, but it is also demanding.
  • Commerce (with or without Mathematics): leads to CA, CS, CMA, B.Com, BBA, economics, banking, finance and management. Taking Mathematics keeps more options open, such as economics and data-related courses.
  • Arts or Humanities: leads to law, psychology, journalism, design, civil services preparation, languages, social sciences and more. It is a strong choice for students with interest in people, society, writing and ideas.
  • Diploma after 10th: polytechnic diploma courses (for example in engineering branches) are another route, with the option of joining the second year of a degree later.

How to choose a stream after 10th: five honest questions

  • Which subjects do I enjoy and do well in without being pushed? Look at your marks over two or three years, not just one exam.
  • What kind of work do I see myself doing: building, healing, managing, creating, teaching, helping people?
  • Am I choosing a stream for myself, or because friends or relatives are choosing it?
  • Am I ready for the workload? Science, in particular, usually means school plus entrance exam preparation.
  • What is the family's realistic budget for coaching and higher education?

Our free stream quiz is a quick first check, and a psychometric test of aptitude and interests can give deeper clues, especially when a student is unsure. It works best as a starting point for a conversation, not the final answer.

Common myths about choosing a stream

  • "Science is for bright students, Arts is for weak students." Not true. Every stream has demanding, well-paid careers.
  • "Commerce means only CA." There are many paths, from banking and analytics to management and law.
  • "Once chosen, there is no going back." Many courses, such as law, management, design and mass communication, accept students from every stream.

FYJC (Class 11) admission in Maharashtra

In Maharashtra, Class 11 is called FYJC (First Year Junior College). In 2025, admission to FYJC was run as an online centralised admission process across the whole state for the first time, on the official portal mahafyjcadmissions.in. Students register online, fill preferences of junior colleges and streams, and are allotted seats in rounds. Rules and dates are announced every year, so follow the official portal and your school's guidance.

When should you decide?

Ideally in Class 9 or early in Class 10, so there is time to explore interests, talk to people in different careers and prepare for FYJC admission without panic. Deciding at the last minute after results is when most mistakes happen.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change my stream after Class 12?

Yes, for many courses. Law, management, design, journalism, hotel management and many others accept students from all streams. Some courses, like MBBS or engineering, need specific subjects in Class 12.

Is a career test useful before choosing a stream?

Yes, as one input. A good aptitude and interest assessment, explained by a counsellor, helps students see their strengths more clearly. You can also take a career test online.
