JoSAA counselling explained: process, rounds, documents and tips for parents

1 November 2026 · 8 min read

Every year, after the JEE results, lakhs of families search for one thing: how does JoSAA counselling work? A good JEE rank is only half the journey. The seat you finally get depends just as much on how carefully you fill your choices and how you respond in each round. This guide explains JoSAA counselling in simple language for students and parents in Nagpur and across Maharashtra.

What is JoSAA counselling?

JoSAA stands for Joint Seat Allocation Authority. It runs one common online counselling for admission to the IITs, NITs, IIITs and other Government Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs). Instead of applying to each institute separately, you register once on the official portal, josaa.nic.in, fill a single list of institute and programme choices in order of preference, and seats are allotted by rank, category and the choices you have filled.

Who can take part?

  • For IITs: candidates who qualify JEE Advanced, using their JEE Advanced rank.
  • For NITs, IIITs and GFTIs (often called NIT+ institutes): candidates with a JEE Main rank who meet the eligibility conditions for that year, including the Class 12 marks requirement given in the official business rules.
  • You can fill choices for both IITs and NIT+ institutes in the same list if you have both ranks.

How many rounds are there in JoSAA counselling?

The number of rounds is announced every year in the official schedule. JoSAA 2025 had six rounds. After JoSAA ends, the Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) usually conducts special rounds for seats that are still vacant in NITs, IIITs and GFTIs. Always follow the current year's schedule on josaa.nic.in rather than last year's pattern.

The JoSAA process, step by step

  • Registration and choice filling on josaa.nic.in, with your JEE details.
  • Mock seat allocation: one or two trial allotments based on the choices filled so far, so you can see where you stand and change your list before it is locked.
  • Choice locking before the deadline. If you do not lock, the last saved choices are used.
  • Seat allotment round by round, followed by online reporting: document upload, response to questions, and payment of the seat acceptance fee within the deadline.
  • Document verification and, finally, physical reporting at the allotted institute as instructed.

Freeze, float and slide: what they mean

After every allotment you must choose one option, and this choice changes what happens in the next round:

  • Freeze: you accept the allotted seat and do not want anything better. You leave the later rounds.
  • Float: you accept the seat but want to be considered for a higher choice at any institute in your list. If a better seat comes, the old one is released.
  • Slide: you accept the seat but want a higher choice only within the same institute (a better branch there).

If you do not complete online reporting, pay the fee or respond within the deadline, you can lose the allotted seat and drop out of the process. Missing a deadline is the most common, and most painful, mistake.

Home State quota for NITs

Most NITs keep a share of their seats (typically half) for students from their own state (Home State quota), and the rest for Other State candidates. For example, students from Maharashtra compete for the Home State seats at VNIT Nagpur. Your home state is decided by the rules for the year, usually the state from which you passed Class 12. This is why a rank that does not get a branch through Other State quota can sometimes get it through Home State quota.

Documents required for JoSAA counselling

The exact list is in the official business rules for the year and depends on your category. Commonly asked documents include:

  • JEE Main and/or JEE Advanced admit card and scorecard.
  • Class 10 certificate (for date of birth) and Class 12 mark sheet.
  • Photo identity proof and recent photographs.
  • Category certificate where applicable (OBC-NCL, EWS, SC, ST) in the format given by JoSAA, issued within the allowed period.
  • PwD certificate, if applicable.
  • Proof of payment of the seat acceptance fee.

Get your OBC-NCL or EWS certificate in the correct format well before results. An old or wrong-format certificate can cost a category seat.

Tips for filling JoSAA choices well

  • Use the previous years' opening and closing ranks published on the official portal as a guide, not a guarantee.
  • Fill many choices. There is no penalty for a long list, but a short list can leave you with no seat.
  • Arrange choices in the order you truly prefer. The system always gives you the highest possible choice in your list.
  • Decide early what matters more to you: the institute or the branch. Both are valid; mixing them at random leads to regret.
  • Keep your state counselling, such as MHT CET CAP in Maharashtra, going at the same time as a back-up.
